I have been racing small sailboats since 1986, most recently in the 17-foot, sloop-rigged Thistle, and over time I have come to see clear parallels between what happens on the water and what effective leadership requires. The environments may differ, but the underlying dynamics such as teamwork, unpredictability, decision-making under pressure, and the need to balance detail with perspective, are remarkably similar.

Sailboat racing is often viewed as an individual or purely competitive sport. While competition is certainly central, including positioning at the start, managing wind shifts, and making tactical decisions, success in a small boat depends fundamentally on collaboration. Each person on board, whether skipper or crew, has a defined role, yet those roles must function in complete alignment. Communication must be precise, and trust must be implicit. Even small lapses in coordination are immediately visible in performance.

This dynamic closely reflects strong leadership environments. Effective leaders do not simply direct; they create clarity, alignment, and shared purpose. When individuals understand both their responsibilities and the broader objective, they are better positioned to act decisively and cohesively. Leadership, in this sense, is less about control and more about enabling coordinated execution.

Another important lesson from small boat racing is the impact of small mistakes. In a 17-foot sailboat, minor errors such as an imperfect tack, a poorly timed maneuver, or a subtle misreading of the wind, can have major consequences. At the same time, many of these errors are preventable through careful preparation. Equipment checks, course awareness, and pre-race planning all contribute to minimizing avoidable risk.

The same principle applies in leadership. Challenges are often not the result of major failures, but rather the accumulation of smaller oversights such as unclear communication, insufficient preparation, or missed signals. While perfection is not attainable, disciplined attention to fundamentals significantly reduces the frequency and impact of these issues.

Even with strong preparation, however, uncertainty remains. In sailing, wind conditions are inherently variable. Shifts can occur suddenly, driven by factors beyond immediate visibility or control. A well-executed plan can quickly become obsolete, while unexpected opportunities can emerge just as rapidly. Recently friends were racing their Thistle at a major event when a military jet took off and flew right over them, rapidly causing them to capsize, twice. None of us had seen this before, and yet once all the competitors realized the risk, we learned to avoid the area near that airport to avoid getting caught in the vortexes caused by these jets.

This unpredictability mirrors the broader economic and organizational landscape. External conditions evolve, sometimes without warning, requiring leaders to remain adaptable. Everything from unexpected tariffs to wars can affect our businesses. The most effective leaders, like experienced sailors, focus less on trying to control these forces and more on interpreting and responding to them. Flexibility, situational awareness, and a willingness to adjust course are essential.

Equally important is maintaining the right perspective. Sailing demands attention to detail including sail trim, balance, and timing, but excessive focus on these elements can lead to a loss of situational awareness. It is possible to become so absorbed in optimizing internal factors that one fails to recognize larger developments, including significant risks such as ships in a shipping channel.

Leadership requires a similar balance. While operational details matter, they must be viewed within a broader strategic context. Leaders must be able to shift between close attention and wide-angle perspective, ensuring that immediate execution aligns with longer-term direction. The ability to “look up” and reassess is critical to avoiding larger missteps. Don’t get so caught up in the details of the business that as a leader we forget to keep sight of long term goals and larger concerns.

One of the most valuable aspects of sailboat racing emerges after the race concludes. Despite the intensity of competition on the water, in the Thistle fleet, the post-race environment is typically collaborative and constructive. Sailors share observations, exchange insights, and discuss both successes and areas for improvement. The emphasis is not on assigning blame, but on learning. More experienced sailboat racers offer advice and feedback to newer sailors as part of the post-racing socials. And all the top-level sailors are welcoming to new sailors. This transfer of knowledge helps everyone become better such that middle level finishers of 20 years ago are now the champions of today.

This approach offers a useful model for leadership, especially in small businesses. Focusing only on mistakes or prolonged criticism is rarely productive. More effective is a reflection on outcomes and identifying what worked, understanding what did not, and determining how to improve. Participating in events and forums where leadership concerns can be discussed can provide constructive feedback and ideas for future improvements. This knowledge transfer, similar to sailboat racing, combined with a forward-looking mindset, allows leaders to continuously grow and develop.

Over time, this process builds capability. Each race contributes to a broader accumulation of experience, sailors at the back of the fleet move up towards the front because of incremental improvements leading to stronger overall performance. Leadership benefits from the same perspective, viewing each outcome as part of an ongoing process rather than a final verdict.

Sailboat racing reinforces that leadership is not about achieving perfect control, instead understanding that the sailboat that makes the least mistakes wins. Effective leadership comes from preparation, adaptability, awareness, and trust. Leadership requires attention to detail, balanced by an understanding of the broader environment. And perhaps most importantly, it depends on fostering a culture where everyone can learn from experience, support one another, and continue improving, regardless of how wind and water conditions evolve.

Attending the NAWBO Women’s Business Conference in Washington, D.C. was nothing short of exhilarating. It was also empowering, uplifting, and eye opening.

The weekend kicked off with a powerful day of advocacy on Capitol Hill. Alongside fellow women business owners, I had the opportunity to visit the offices of members congress on both sides of the aisle to advocate for changes in federal policy that directly impact women entrepreneurs. It was empowering to sit across from lawmakers and share real stories—our challenges, our growth, and what we need to thrive. I was reminded that this work didn’t start with us. Women have been showing up, speaking out, and fighting for change for decades, and NAWBO has been leading the way for over 50 years. They’ve been a tireless advocate for women business owners, helping shape policy and build a community that supports leadership, growth, and resilience.

Throughout the conference, I met women who had built a wide range of businesses—some leading a single employee, others managing teams of hundreds. They were running everything from small startups to large enterprises. Some were succeeding, others were rebuilding after setbacks, and many were somewhere in between. Hearing the stories of these fellow women business owners was incredibly powerful. They shared both their wins and their failures. They opened up about their struggles—stories I could instantly relate to. No one glossed over the hard parts. They talked about betrayal, starting over from nothing, and the emotional toll entrepreneurship can take. And yet, here they were: leading companies, serving on boards, and mentoring the next generation.

These stories reminded me that success isn’t always a straight line. Often, the most impressive leaders are the ones who’ve had to fight their way back after falling. Small businesses make up a significant part of the U.S. economy, and being surrounded by so many inspiring, driven women was deeply empowering. Thank you to NAWBO for bringing us together—to make us stronger, to share our stories, and to learn from one another.

Finally, there was the dancing. I loved the dancing. It was such a beautiful reminder that joy is part of the journey too. To watch a room full of strong, accomplished women let loose, laughing, spinning, celebrating each other was exactly what I needed. Sometimes we get so caught up in fighting to be taken seriously, to push forward, to rebuild, that we forget how important it is to just have fun. That joy is just as radical as resilience.

Being part of this community of bold, driven women gave me energy and reminded me of the importance of developing community, advocacy for ourselves and our community of women business owners, and of remembering to have fun along the way.

We reengineered the manufacturing processes in order to guarantee the quality of the Elite Spectrum and other epilators we ship.

So, why invest in this particular epilator? What differentiates it from the many other epilators available to today's electrologists?

One of the fundamental characteristics of the Elite Spectrum is inherent in its name: it offers a SPECTRUM of possibilities to its users. For the electrologist, this epilator employs a straightforward, easy to use interface for clients settings using any of the three electrolysis modalities- thermolysis, blend or galvanic. For estheticians, this epilator is able to perform anaphoresis, cataphoresis, or a full galvanic facial. For practitioners of advanced electrolysis (where licensure allows), this epilator is powerful enough to be used for skin tag removal and red vein treatment. Further, the Elite Spectrum can be purchased as a "Base" (RF and Galvanic currents) or can be ordered with enhanced functionality. The "Air" function provides forced hair from the machine, through special Air needle holders and out along the needle, providing a gentle flow of air to distract the client's nerves from the discomfort of electrolysis. Another option is an upgrade to "K-Power" which provides an approximately 20% increase in power to the machine. These upgrades can be purchased singly or together, and they can be ordered at the time of purchase or at any time after receiving your new Elite Spectrum.

The reengineered Instantronics Elite Spectrum is built to be a true workhorse: rugged, reliable, and designed for long-term use. Purchasers of the Elite Spectrum can count on knowing their purchase is backed by a three-year warranty on all parts and labor for any newly purchased epilator,* hassle-free returns in the event that a epilator or epilator accessory is found to be defective, and personal, prompt customer service. The company is led by Dr. Sara Paisner, President of Synoptic Products, and a woman with deep roots in the electrolysis industry. She understands that value matters to the small business owners who make up this industry and work as entrepreneurs, caregivers, and Allied Health Professionals.

We believe that electrolysis has the ability to profoundly affect people's lives for the better, and that the Elite Spectrum is a tool that can help electrologists enact that change in their clinic practice.

*Exclusions apply as noted in the Epilator Purchase Agreement.

Rather than continue to ship substandard epilators, production was halted , and an investigation into the root causes of the problems was begun. For each issue that was discovered, potential solutions were evaluated in collaboration with an specialized group of engineers, and problems were resolved. Here is some of what we discovered:

     1. Power loss - Certain Instantron epilators manufactured between 2020-2023 showed issues with low power or power loss over time. Our engineers noticed that a subset of components had been either moved from their original location or had been replaced with lower quality substitutions. In addition, the connections between some internal components was not as strong as they should have been. New components and attachment protocols now correct this issue.

     2. Phantom button presses - Some epilators were found to experience a phantom button press; for example, the beeper would turn on even after the electrologist using the epilator had turned it off. It was found that this was a result of a Radio Frequency (RF) interreference occurring between some internal components. By re-engineering the components that make the front panel interface work for the user, this issue has also been resolved.

     3. Poor quality testing procedures - It was determined that some of the legacy testing equipment being used was outdated or inadequate. New, modern testing equipment was designed and purchased to ensure that each epilator is properly calibrated and working well before being shipped to its new owner. This became one facet of an enhanced quality control process to ensure high quality performance in the epilators we manufacture.

The epilator that electrologists purchase are a huge investment for your business, so we want to make sure that the Elite Spectrum is robust and well manufactured to make your work as efficient as possible, so you can support your clients.

Scientific technology is already beginning to create personalized skin care routines tailored to individual biology, and the study of the skin microbiome is offering new possibilities for safer, more effective skin treatments. Electrologists have the chance to integrate this knowledge into their practice and provide smarter, evidence-based pre- and post-care for clients. Technology is also affecting the electrolysis landscape with constant innovations in epilator design and probe construction, all with the end goal of making treatments more effective and accessible.

Mental health has been in the spotlight since the Covid-19 pandemic, and the way we talk about and understand mental wellness is changing with natural consequences to how we talk about hair removal. As electrologists are generally aware, electrolysis is essential care, not just cosmetic. This is especially true for those dealing with gender dysphoria or conditions like PCOS. Insurance policies and government regulations had recently began expanding to acknowledge this, and in the event that that trend continues, electrologists will benefit from understanding how to advocate for clients and navigate these systems effectively. The more that electrologists embrace their role as allied health professionals, the more they can influence policy and access to care.

When it comes to transgender care, we appear to be at a cultural and political crossroads. While some regions are holding firm and expanding access, others are imposing restrictions. Electrologists are often on the front lines—helping transgender clients get the documentation and support they need for procedures like gender-affirming surgery. Staying informed on best practices and speaking up for equitable care has become part of the job for electrologists who work with transgender clients..

Regulations and licensure remain inconsistent globally. In the U.S., for example, some states still don’t require electrologists to be licensed. That lack of structure can limit professional credibility and client safety. Organized electrologists and associations continue to push for unified standards, potentially leading to changes that could open the door to easier insurance reimbursements and greater recognition within the medical field. The definition of "medical hair removal" continues to evolve. More physicians are recognizing the medical necessity of electrolysis, and whenever possible, electrologists benefit from greater contact with physicians and collaborating on treatment planning and compliance protocols. Electrologist can be an integral part of the care team that supports for patients during their healthcare.

Electrologists who stay informed, organized, and open to change will be the ones shaping it, not just reacting to it. Let’s keep moving forward together, with professionalism, compassion, and a shared commitment to care.

It is the oldest form of electrolysis, originally developed back in the late 1800s to treat ingrown eyebrow hairs resulting from battlefield surgeries. By inserting a metal filament into a hair follicle and sending direct current (DC) through the wire, hair growth in that follicle was destroyed.

This method of electrolysis is accomplished via a chemical reaction. Water (H2O) combined with salt (sodium chloride, NaCl) in the presence of electrons formed by the flow of the DC current results in the formation of hydrogen gas (H2), chlorine gas (Cl2) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH), commonly referred to as lye or caustic soda. This lye (NaOH) is a strong corrosive base that dissolves most living tissue. The chemical formula is written like this:

H2O + NaCL = H2 + CL2 + NaOH

During electrolysis, the lye (NaOH) that has been created dissolves the chemical bonds normally present in the hair follicle's proteins and disables the ability of stem cells to grow new hairs. This method of decomposition is called saponification.

If you have any questions feel free to reach out to us, you can find us on our website at instantronics.com, social media @instantronics, or feel free to give us a call we love talking to you 919-908-0222.

The gas is infused over a period of hours to days, depending on how long it takes in a given package to kill the necessary bacteria. The packages for EOG Sterilization is generally a plastic side that conforms to the shape of the item being sterilized attached to a paper-like backing that is permeable to the gas. The paper-like backing allows only very small molecules, such as ethylene oxide gas, and the components of air, to pass through. High pressure pushes the gas through the backing displacing all the air, the ethylene oxide has is allowed to cycle around the components, followed by the toxic gas getting flushed out with air. The backing of the EOG sterilized products are where the item name, lot number and other necessary information, including expiration date, is listed. Many items in dentist and doctors' offices are sterilized with EOG sterilization.

Ethylene Oxide Gas sterilization companies use what's referred to as the overkill method. This is designed to kill one million spores of what's referred to as the most resistant organism, something called bacillus astrophase, in half of the normal cycle time.

The packaging looks different than for EOG sterilization, especially has the sterilization is marked via a color changing dot. This dot is prominently placed on the packaging and the color change for after exposure to radiation is clearly defined. and that's usually in a package like this this kind of a package. It generally has a dot and that dot tells you if the product has been sterilized. This type of all paper packaging can be seen in Doctor and Dentists' offices as well. The sterilzation company, using gamma or X-ray radiation, determine the amount of radiation, also referred to as the dosage, that's necessary for the overkill method. Note that after the irradiation complete, the dot on the packaging should have changed color, usually from blue to red.

Rest assured, there are no toxic compounds on the needles when you use them. Additionally, the expiration date listed on the packaging is based on extensive testing of the packaging materials and the radiation method by the companies that do the sterilization. If expired probes are used, you may be opening yourself and your client up to dangerous conditions and the potential for a massive amount of liability. DO NOT USE EXPIRED PROBES. The danger to clients, to you and to your income just aren't worth it.
